A Simple Example: Structural Shaping Optimization with SmartDO + FreeCAD + PrePoMax + CalculiX
Here is a simple example showing SmartDO’s synchronizing capabilities : a six-variable shape optimization problem using FreeCAD (geometry), PrePoMax (meshing and boundary setup), and CalculiX (nonlinear FEA).
The objective is to minimize structural volume, with constraint of Von Mises stress < 150 MPa.
Figure 2 shows the geometry and design variables of the model.

The final optimized design by SmartDO :
- Initial volume: 164,265.2 mm³
- Optimized volume: 74,216.3 mm³
- All design constraints satisfied
- SmartDO took about 130 Calculix analysis to reach the optimum.
